KNIGHTS OF THE ARMOR FORCE

 General George Patton Museum

The General George Patton Museum is located at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The museum is dedicated to General George S. Patton, Jr's life and the history of armored warfare, from World War I through the present day.

The original museum was dedicated on May 30, 1949 by Beatrice Patton, the widow of the general. At that time it was known as the Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor. The present building was constructed between 1972 and 1992 without cost to the U.S. Government by the Patton Museum Foundation, Inc. with funds donated by thousands of individuals and organizations from around the world.

On December 12, 2005, museum officials announced that the museum will remain at Fort Knox, despite the fact that the Army's Armor Center is moving to Fort Benning, Georgia. The U.S. Government will build a new museum at Fort Benning to be named "The National Armor and Cavalry Museum". The new museum will be built with tax payer funds for the most part since there is little interest to build a replacement for the famous Patton Museum. Unfortunately the Armor School will be moving about 75 percent of the museum’s collection. The portion of the museum that remains will be General Patton’s personal items, a selection of military vehicles that covers his military career, and the Patton series tanks. The vacant space within the museum will be used by newly arrived units to Fort Knox, including the U.S. Army Accessions Command and Human Resources Command, as well as other military units assigned to Fort Knox.  Thanks to the Infantry influenced BRAC decision to move the Armor Center to Fort Benning future Armor soldiers will not be able to visit the Patton Museum while they are attending resident Armor training.
