RULES FOR ARMOR LEADERS TO LIVE BY
Be willing and able to Shoot, Move and Communicate mounted (know your job).
Seek and reward excellence (SSgt Lafayette Pool Award, EIA Program and Order of St. George).
Identify possible future threats and train to defeat them.
Train Armor Core Competencies and minimize outside training distractions. Reward NCOs who are creative in these training activities.
Simulators are only tools; train on the tank too, even if it’s stationary.
Boresighting of the Main gun is a critical but perishable skill; make time on the training schedule to practice it to standard!
Gun laying and manipulation of controls is a lost art; re-find it! Reward NCOs who are creative in these training activities.
Remember the old cavalry rule: the horse, the saddle, and then the man. Train your soldiers to take care of their vehicle, equipment and themselves, in that order.
An Armor NCOs has “Hip Pocket Training” ready when an opportunity avails itself.
Seek to minimize the influences of other branches in your unit.
Take care of your soldiers before yourself.
Be at the critical place and time (everyday has at least one).
Push-Ups are for Physical Training; not a way to discipline soldiers.
Talk to your soldiers and let them know you care about their well-being. Correct them when they do something wrong.
Thank your soldiers for a job well done (the little jobs too).
Soldiers learn from example (whether you intend it or not).
Five minutes, checking on a guard in freezing rain is worth a year of “we care about you speeches”.
Considering input from subordinates and taking council from peers doesn’t make you weak; it makes you smart.
Armor NCOs don’t just know enough history to pass the Board; they know the History of Armor, learn from it and apply it.
An Armor NCO does not lie, cheat, or steal or tolerate those who do.
