  Lieutenant General Daniel Van Voorhis   

The Grandfather of the Armor Force









 

 

On 24 October 1878 Daniel Van Voorhis was born in Zanesville, Ohio. In 1898, he was mustered into Federal Service as a Corporal in the Pennsylvania National Guard and in the same year was appointed Captain while serving in the Philippine Insurrection. In 1900 he was appointed a Second Lieutenant of Cavalry in the Regular Army. Following World War I he served in Texas as commander of the 16th Cavalry Regiment, Assistant Chief of Staff of 2nd Division, and Assistant Chief of Staff of VIII Corps. In 1924 he was assigned as Executive Officer to the Chief of Cavalry, and in 1929 he graduated from the Army War College.
